American Opinion of Immigrants: Different from Trump’s

If you were to gauge the opinion of immigrants amongst American citizens by the way the federal government runs immigration policy, you would think that Americans hate immigrants. We have been reporting lately that the Trump administration has –due to the COVID-19 pandemic– been ramping up restrictions on immigration.

And, of course, we are all familiar with the President’s vulgar rhetoric on immigration. However, the way the President and his administration speak about immigration and the way that they are against immigration in their policy is not representative of the American population at all.

A recent study by the Pew Research Center states that most Americans think that immigrants are a necessary component of American society. When I say “most,” I mean 77% of the U.S. population consists of U.S. citizens. This means that even many of the President’s constituents believe that immigrants are important!

What exactly is this important to them? Fundamentally, it is the fact that legal and immigrants without papers take on jobs that most Americans do not want. This opinion is consistent across all demographic groups in the United States. Things like agriculture and food services are examples of these jobs.

This opinion, shared by most Americans, runs directly counter to the vulgar rhetoric of the Trump administration, which states that immigrants are taking away all jobs. According to the same study, American opinion is essentially in line with the facts: immigrants do take U.S. jobs, but the jobs U.S. citizens do not want to do.

Doing so opens up more opportunities for U.S. citizens to pursue jobs they would like. We can see, then, quite easily, the absurdity of increasing immigration restrictions. U.S. society needs immigrants to function.
